H: Nathan, it's been said that there is one word that will free us from the weight and pain of life. And, that word is love, and I believe that. It doesn't mean that it hasn't been hard or that it won't be. It just means that I found a stillness and bravery in myself with you. You make me brave and I will love you until the end of time. This I vow today.
N: Last year we stood on a beach and I told you how much I loved you and how I would always, always protect you. And, that day nobody believed that this would work. But, I don’t think anybody understood the love that I had for you; because, if they did they would have never doubted us. So I wanted to marry you all over again in front of most of our world. Because today, when I look into your eyes my love for you only grows. It’s even stronger now and that love will never waver. This I vow to you today and always and forever.
Haley and Nathan's vows to each other at their vow renewal.[src]

Naley is the ship name of Nathan Scott and Haley James Scott.

Nathan and Haley first meet when Haley, Lucas Scott's best friend, decided to tutor Nathan in English despite Lucas's disapproval. Haley tells Nathan she will tutor him only if he stops tormenting Lucas and Nathan agrees. Thanks to their lessons though, the two got to know each other better and, despite coming from totally different worlds, things change and evolve between them and they end up falling in love. Soon after, they got married when they were still in high school as Nathan was already emancipated. Despite many obstacles, they made it through thick and thin and remained happily married for the entire series' run: because of this reason, Nathan and Haley are often considered one of the strongest couples in television history. From their unique start to the fact that they got married in high school and even having their first child right after graduation, Nathan and Haley continued to be completely in love. This sets them apart from any other television couple. Their vow, "Always and forever", became one of the most iconic lines of the show.

Relationship arc[]

Season 1[]

Nathan and Haley's relationship doesn't start out in the best way possible, as it is initially just a way for Nathan to piss off Lucas (since Haley is his best friend), while Haley begins to tutor Nathan in literature in exchange for having him stop tormenting Lucas in the Ravens. However, thanks to their tutor sessions, they get to know each other better as Haley sees there's more in Nathan then the popular jock and bully and is able to bring out the best in him, something he immediately acknowledges, starting to feel understood and truly loved for the firs time in his life. Then, they soon fall for each other and begin dating despite their different dreams, ambitions and personalities. Haley helps Nathan to deal with the pressure his father puts on him to perform well in basketball and Nathan encourages Haley to try new things and experiences, making her get out of her confort zone of nerd, study, next door girl. Despite revealing to be right for each other, much to their own surprise, Nathan makes some mistakes throughout the relationship, such as pretending he's having a tutoring session with Haley when he is actually on a date with her because his friends are making fun of him, which makes Haley think he is embarrassed to be seen with her since she's not the popular type of girl who he normally dates, but thanks to her goodness and kindness, he is able to make amends and improves his immature traits, slowly becoming more and more a better person, while their relationship keeps growing stronger and stronger. However, Nathan and Haley's relationship puts a strain on Lucas and Haley's friendship because Nathan and Lucas are sworn enemies and the latter is worried that his brother could hurt her best friend, but when Lucas realizes that Nathan and Haley are truly in love with each other and that Nathan is actually really good to her, more than he could have ever thought, he gives them his blessing and Haley also helps the two of them to finally put their divergences aside and form a real brotherly relationship. Nathan and Haley's relationship is strained when he begins telling her he would have sex with her, while she's always wished to wait until marriage, going into a crisis, and the situation worsens when Haley accidentally finds out some porn stuff on Nathan's laptop: she is very upset by this, leaving heartbroken. Nathan, feeling guilty and sorry, is determined to gain Haley's forgiveness, so he stands outside her house and gets completely soaked in the rain while waiting for Haley to apologize to her and, when, she arrives, he says that he is willing to wait until marriage to have sex with her because he loves her and that he won't move from there until she will forgive him, which, she does, understanding he's sincere and truly loves her, so the two reconcile and kiss in the rain. Then, realizing Haley is the most important things in his life, Nathan proposes to her and she accepts, so the two end up getting married in secret from all their friends after his petition to be emancipated at sixteen and make love for the first time in the last moments of the finale.

Season 2[]

As their marriage continues, Haley and Nathan move in together in an apartment he's rent after moving out from his parents' house as he's sick and tired of their toxic presence in his life. They seem to encounter more and more hardships as a young couple, realizing that their marriage might hinder their dreams: Nathan would be a basketball player in the NBA while Haley realizes she would become a singer, since she is very passionate about music. Many people get in their way, like Chris Keller, a selfish and arrogant but talented musician whom Haley begins working with, and Haley's older sister Taylor, who returns to Tree Hill and stays with them. This is awkward for Nathan because he has lost his virginity to her, not knowing she was Haley's sister all this time. Eventually, Haley gets a great offer to go on tour with Chris. This angers Nathan because he gave up a great basketball opportunity to be with Haley. Nathan gives Haley an ultimatum: him or music. Haley chooses music and goes on tour, leaving Nathan heartbroken and angry and returning to his old ways. He even attempts suicide, but ultimately survives. In the season finale Haley returns, hoping to reconcile with Nathan.

Season 3[]

Haley is back in Tree Hill determined to win Nathan back and save their marriage as both begin their senior year. Nathan is still hurt and keeps her at a distance, saying that he will always love her but can't trust her anymore. Haley says that she loved every minute of every night on tour, but that it was never as much as she loves him. After some time, she manages to gain his forgiveness and they eventually reconcile, getting back together. After some time, Nathan proposes to Haley again, thinking they didn't have a proper wedding and now they've found their back to each other, he wants to marry her in front of all their friends and family, so the two renew their vows in the season finale. However, right after the ceremony, while traveling to the airport for their 'honeymoon', they witness a car crash on a bridge involving Nathan's uncle Cooper and Rachel Gatina, who both fall into the water with their car: Nathan jumps into the river to save them while a terrified Haley screams for help, and his fate is unknown.

Season 4[]

Fortunately, Nathan survives, while he and Haley are at their final semester of senior year. While being physically fine, Nathan is still in shock after surviving the car accident, and Haley tries to help him. Their marriage is put to the test when Haley discovers she is pregnant with their first child while Nathan gets a scholarship at his dream college. After she tells him, Nathan is angry with her as she's waited a bit before telling him since she was scared of his reaction, but eventually accepts it and goes along with the news. Nathan's involvement with some loan sharks almost costs Haley her life in a near-fatal car crash, but fortunately she and the baby survive the accident. During the graduation ceremony, Haley goes into labor while she's giving the valedictorian speech. After being rushed to the hospital, Haley successfully gives birth to her and Nathan's healthy first child, James Lucas Scott.

Season 5[]

Haley struggles to raise Jamie after Nathan has endured a back injury which has left his legs paralyzed, forcing him into a wheelchair and making him become angry, down and depressed, while she's become a teacher at Tree Hill High School. Nathan is now distant and lazy, drinking all the time and constantly lying on the couch and Haley tells him that she and Jamie can't keep living like this way any longer, so he gets his life together again, cleaning himself up and going through physical therapy, eventually managing to walk again. Another issue in their marriage arises with the presence of Carrie, a local nanny they hire to babysit Jamie, since she tries to seduce Nathan and take Jamie as her own. Nathan catches Carrie skinny dipping in their pool at midnight: since he and Haley have been growing distant, he watches her but tells her to stop. Carrie lies and apologizes profusely, saying she had no idea. Nathan believes her, but it's the last straw when a naked Carrie surprises Nathan during his shower. Nathan quickly tries to get Carrie out, telling her he is in love with his wife very much and is not interested in her, but Haley finds both Nathan and Carrie in the shower and kicks both of them out, despite Nathan trying to explain nothing happened between them. After some time separated, Nathan and Haley decide to work on their marriage for Jamie and themselves, going to couple therapy, and soon reunite, becoming stronger than ever and deciding they need to pursue some personal dreams as they feel they've put themselves behind in favor of their family.

Season 6[]

Nathan and Haley have successfully overcome their crisis and are now in a stable marriage, They soon have to deal with the loss of Quentin at the beginning of the season. As they've promised to each other at the end of the previous season, they try to reach some personal goals: Nathan works on his 'comeback' to basketball and by the end of the season, he tells Haley that he made it to the NBA as the point guard for the Charlotte Bobcats, while Haley gets closer to music again and starts to work with Peyton in her record studio, the Red Bedroom Records, after having helped her in the previous season to find her first successful artist, Mia Catalano, and loses her job as a teacher because of some disagreements with the new principal.

Season 7[]

Renee, a woman who had met Nathan (now a star NBA player) at many parties, claims she is pregnant with Nathan's child. This puts a strain on his and Haley's marriage although Haley has no doubts it's all false and, with the help of Dan, Renee drops all charges after admitting she's been lying. Meanwhile, Haley has taken in charge of the record studio because of Peyton's departure from Tree Hill at the end of the previous season. Then, Nathan helps a struggling Haley as she deals with the death of her mother, Lydia James. In the season finale, Haley also finds out that she is pregnant with their second child: she tells Nathan, who is overjoyed, and also says she thinks that this time it will be a girl.

Season 8[]

Nathan and Haley deal with Clay and Quinn getting shot. Nathan quits the NBA after learning that the condition of his back is deteriorating again, feeling his time as a basketball player is officially over. Then, he decides to become a sport agent, entering into partnership with Clay. Haley begins to volunteer at a crisis center while she keeps running the record studio. At the end of the season, the pair welcome their second child, a daughter whom they name Lydia Bob Scott.

Season 9[]

Haley allows Dan to stay in her and Nathan's home after his diner is burned down. Nathan is kidnapped, leaving Haley distraught and panicked. Lucas returns to help Haley and, as her request, he takes Jamie and Lydia away to stay with him and Peyton for a while, until she figures what happened to Nathan. Dan, with the help of Julian and Chris Keller, is able to find Nathan, but sacrifices himself in order to save his life, taking a bullet instead of him. Ultimately, Nathan and Haley are passionately reunited and, as the series ends, they are still happily married with their two beautiful children. In the last scene, a time jump shows us the two going to watch a game of the Ravens with all the Tree Hill gang: in fact, Jamie has become part of the team and is the new all time scorer.

Trivia[]

Highlights[]

First date[]

Naleyfirstdate

Nathan and Haley go on their first date.

After going to Nathan's parents basketball party, Brooke found a note that Haley had written to Nathan and realized that she had feelings for Nathan and read it in front of everyone, so this made it seem to Haley that Nathan had been passing around the note and making fun of her. This damaged their blossoming relationship and, despite his attempt to explain the situation, she wouldn't listen to him. The next day, Brooke went to explain and try to make it up to the couple by making Haley agree to go on a treasure hunt date with Nathan - although Naley never did agree, Brooke went ahead with her plan.

They were then sent around Tree Hill with a mission which, once they completed it, lead to another tease, included going to an underwear shop and buying something for each other. One of the stops was at a restaurant to order each other their favorite meals and here Haley claimed that mac and cheese 'was the food of the gods'. But once Nathan's friends arrived and he claimed Haley was just his tutor and they weren't on a date, Haley got upset and left. ("Life in a Glass House") ("The Search for Something More")

First kiss[]

Naleyfirstkiss

Nathan and Haley share their first kiss.

Their first kiss came the day after their terrible first date. Nathan went to Haley's house to explain himself after she claimed he was nice to her only when they were alone. Nathan told her he didn't admit they were on a date because he wanted to be the type of guy that was good enough to be seen with her. Haley responded by saying there was nothing he could do to surprise her, so he kissed her.

She then told him that he shouldn't have done that, but Nathan said he wanted to, so Haley jumped into his arms, reciprocating the kiss. After this, they began their relationship. ("The Search for Something More")

Saying "I love you"[]

Ily123

Nathan says "I love you" to Haley for the first time.

Nathan was the first of the couple to admit that he was in love with Haley. They were still on a bench waiting for the bus after Nathan had finished working. Haley was worrying about being a tease after Nathan had pulled back from kissing her earlier on in the day as she wasn't ready to have sex.

Haley tells Nathan 'I Love You' back.

But Nathan told her that he didn't want to push her and admitted that he was freaking out about her tattoo but didn't want to pressure her or do anything to push her away and told her he couldn't help falling in love with her. She then kissed him and told him that she loved him too.

"Always and forever"[]

("Like You Like an Arsonist")

Always and Forever is the couple's 'catchphrase'. It was first used by Nathan in his vows during their wedding and since then the couple has often used it to express their love and commitment for each other. Some of the most memorable times it was used by the couple have been when Haley the night after she returned to Tree Hill from tour and Nathan replied that he did still love her, but just couldn't trust her anymore, or during the school shooting Haley used it to identify Nathan and when Nathan returned following his kidnapping, he told Haley he loved her always and forever.

Kissing in the rain[]

Rain

All of Haley and Nathan's rain kisses.

Kissing in the rain was an important part of their relationship and something they considered as 'theirs' as it was often when they were the happiest during their relationship. Some of the couple’s most important moments were surrounded by rain kisses - their engagement and first reconciliation.

First rain kiss[]

1strainkiss

Haley and Nathan share their first rain kiss.

Nathan and Haley's first and most iconic rain kiss was a reconciliation. Haley was ignoring Nathan after she discovered some porn stuff on his laptop. This upset Haley because she was not ready for sex and thought that Nathan would compare her to them when they finally would have sex. Nathan waited for Haley outside her house in the rain, just to say he was sorry and that he loved her. Haley forgave Nathan and they kissed. Later, they went back to Nathan's apartment where Nathan proposed to Haley. ("The Games That Play Us")

Second rain kiss[]

Rainkiss

Haley and Nathan share their second rain kiss.

Their second rain kiss, which was also the most iconic after the first one, came after a storm hit Tree Hill while Nathan and Haley were at Nathan's house. They had only recently reconciled after she came back from tour and took the time to discuss the faults which led to their crisis and how to fix it. This resulted in Haley telling Nathan that she wasn't proud of going on tour, because she didn't think he was. To prove she was wrong and show that he was always proud of her despite the state of their relationship, he went out into the rain to retrieve a box containing magazine cuttings of Haley's achievements on tour. The wind blew them away, but Haley told Nathan he didn't need them as he had her and they kissed on his car before making love. ("The Wind That Blew My Heart Away")

Third rain kiss[]

Naleyrain

Haley and Nathan share their third rain kiss.

The third rain kiss happened after they decided to be a married couple again following the school shooting and contextual death of Keith. Nathan wanted to make it rain in remembrance for their happiest moments together so took her to Tree Hill High School's football field where the sprinklers came on. This caused Haley to admit that she didn't know she could be so happy and they kissed on a picnic blanket in the middle of the field. ("Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them")

Fourth rain kiss[]

Kissingintherain

Haley and Nathan share their fourth rain kiss.

There fourth rain kiss wasn't actually true, but a part of a fantasy of Nathan's while in the shower during his and Haley's second separation during their early twenties due to his back injury sending him into a deep depression and Carrie interfering in the marriage and family. The 'dream' kiss was a reenactment of their first kiss in season 1, with the couple saying the same words. ("Hundred")

Fifth rain kiss[]

Rainy

Haley and Nathan share their fifth and last rain kiss.

Their fifth and last rain kiss happened following Nathan returning after his kidnapping. Nathan planned a romantic evening for them two without their children to embrace their romance and past. They had a romantic candle light dinner where he served mac and cheese - Haley's favorite dish which she referred to as 'food of the gods' on their first ever date. He also gave her a cracker jack box like he did on their first tutor session which also contained a bracelet although a much more expensive one and he referred to his famous quote: "Don't say I never gave you anything". It then started to rain, so Nathan suggested to go outside: they went out and danced, and then kissed. This was also Nathan and Haley's final kiss in the series.

Cracker Jack bracelet[]

On their first tutoring session, Nathan opened a Cracker Jack snack and the prize was a bracelet. He gave the bracelet to Haley and it then became a symbol of their relationship.

Children[]

Jamie was conceived before the couple renewed their vows, right after their reconciliation following the strain put in their marriage by Haley going on tour with Chris Keller and during their first months of senior year. He wasn't planned and because of this and the car crash the two had their second wedding Haley kept the pregnancy a secret from Nathan for the first few weeks. Once she told him he struggled to accept it, having just gotten into Duke University and upset that she hadn't told him sooner. However, after thinking it over, the idea of having a baby with the love of his life thrilled Nathan and he announced in his press conference that he was undecided about where he was going to college because his decision were now based on his family and not just him anymore. Haley had a healthy pregnancy, except when she was about 4 months pregnant she was hit by a car, but both she and Jamie turned out to be fine. Haley went into labor during her valedictorian speech and gave birth to Jamie with Nathan at her side. He was named after Haley's father and her maiden name and Nathan's brother and Haley's best friend Lucas as his middle. His godparents ended up being Lucas and Brooke Davis. Along with Lucas, Nathan and Haley raised Jamie through college and because of this they all had a very close relationship, with Jamie being very mature for his age. Jamie was always very close to his mother especially during Nathan's depression, but during and even more afterwards he highly idolized his father, wanting to be just like him. They were connected in their love for basketball with high school Jamie beating Nathan's high scoring title. He also had a very close bond with his uncle Lucas, who was his other "hero" besides his dad, and with his honorary aunts Brooke and Peyton.

Lydia Bob Scott[]

Lydia wasn't planned like Jamie (although Nathan had expressed the wish to have another child) and was conceived during Haley's battle with depression following her mother's and Lydia's namesake's death. It was being pregnant with Lydia that helped to lift Haley from her state and during her pregnancy she was able to come to terms with her mother's passing. Nathan always wanted a daughter that looked just like Haley and felt so blessed when she was born. During Nathan's abduction, Lydia learned to walk which was emotional for Haley because she was scared that Nathan would never get to witness this. However, once Nathan returned home, Lydia immediately walked for him and it was a very emotional moment. Both Nathan and Haley had a very close and good relationship with their daughter.
